1 • IS IT A GOOD FIT?

For rural British Columbia, Starlink can solve a problem that geography created.

Rural internet is unusually local. A service that works beautifully a few kilometres away may be unavailable—or dramatically worse—at your property. Fibre follows construction routes. Fixed wireless depends on towers and line of sight. Cellular performance changes with terrain, antenna placement and congestion. In a narrow valley, even a strong signal on the highway can disappear behind a hill or inside a building.

Starlink changes the problem. Instead of needing a cable to your driveway or a nearby terrestrial tower, the property needs a workable view of the sky and dependable power. That can make satellite broadband especially useful on acreages, reserve lands, ranches, cabins, remote work sites and small communities where conventional infrastructure is sparse.

But “available at my address” and “good installation site” are not the same thing. A service-address check tells you whether Starlink will sell service there. The obstruction scan tells you whether your particular yard, roof or pole location is likely to maintain it.

A practical rule: If you already have reliable fibre, keep fibre high on the list. If your choices are weak or inconsistent terrestrial services, compare Starlink seriously. If your property has a narrow slice of sky between cliffs and trees, run the obstruction scan before getting excited about the plan.

2 • HOW IT WORKS

Starlink is satellite internet, but it behaves differently from old satellite internet.

Low-Earth-orbit satellites

Traditional satellite internet often relied on satellites extremely far above Earth. Starlink uses a large constellation in low Earth orbit, reducing the distance data must travel and making interactive uses such as video calls, browsing and gaming more practical.

The connection moves

Your terminal does not depend on one fixed satellite in one spot. Satellites move across the sky and the network changes links rapidly. That is why a broad field of view matters more than a single clear “line” toward one point.

Your home network is separate

The Starlink terminal creates the internet link; your router and Wi-Fi distribute it locally. If the satellite link is excellent but Wi-Fi is weak at the far end of the house, the device will still feel slow.

Do not aim the dish by guesswork. Starlink’s own obstruction tool is more useful than a compass rule because required orientation and field of view depend on the hardware and network. Let the app evaluate the exact proposed location.

3 • TREES, MOUNTAINS & THE FRASER CANYON

The hardest part of many rural-BC installations is not internet service—it is sky.

Around Lytton and the Fraser Canyon, properties can sit between steep slopes, rock faces, mature trees and narrow valley openings. That environment is exactly where conventional wireless services can struggle, but it can also make satellite-terminal placement more important.

A distant mountain on the horizon is not automatically fatal. What matters is whether terrain, trees or structures intrude into the field of view required by the terminal. A tree that appears harmless from ground level may occupy a substantial part of the useful sky when the dish is mounted beside a house.

Seasonal change matters too. A location that looks open in winter can become significantly more obstructed after leaves return. Branch growth, snow-loaded limbs and future building work are worth considering before making a permanent mount.

LOCAL CONTEXT

Fraser Canyon properties deserve an obstruction-first approach.

Do not assume that because Starlink works at a neighbour’s home it will behave identically at yours. Two nearby properties can have very different sky exposure.

  • Lytton and nearby rural properties can have steep horizon angles.
  • Boston Bar and Fraser Canyon sites may combine tall trees with canyon walls.
  • Spences Bridge and Ashcroft may offer more open sky, but buildings and individual tree lines still matter.
  • Lillooet-area properties can vary dramatically by slope, valley and elevation.
  • Cabins and seasonal properties should be checked at the actual intended mounting point—not from the driveway.

Residential vs. Roam: if the dish is going to live at one normal household location, start by comparing Residential. If portability, travel, seasonal movement or supported in-motion use is central to the need, examine Roam. Do not choose Roam merely because it sounds more flexible if you do not need that flexibility.

5 • PERFORMANCE

Think in ranges, not in one advertised speed.

Satellite broadband performance changes with service plan, local demand, network conditions, weather, terminal visibility and the quality of the network inside your building. A speed test taken once at noon is not a complete description of the service.

Starlink publishes expected-performance ranges by plan and location. Those figures are more useful than treating one customer’s speed-test screenshot as a guarantee. Real-world performance should be judged over several days, including busy evening periods.

Latency is dramatically better than traditional geostationary satellite systems because Starlink satellites are much closer to Earth. That makes video conferencing, remote desktop work, cloud applications and many games practical. It is still a wireless satellite path, so consistency can vary more than a high-quality fibre connection.

Web Normally an easy workload when the link is healthy.
Streaming Generally practical; simultaneous streams increase demand.
Video calls Good obstruction performance matters more than headline download speed.
Gaming Possible, but brief interruptions and latency variation matter more than raw Mbps.
For remote work: a short obstruction-driven interruption can be more disruptive to a Teams or Zoom call than a modest reduction in download speed. When evaluating a work-from-home installation, prioritize stability, obstruction history, Wi-Fi and backup power—not just speed-test numbers.

6 • HARDWARE

The smallest or newest dish is not automatically the best choice.

Standard kits

Usually the natural starting point for permanent household installations. A standard kit balances performance, durability and ease of use for normal residential requirements.

Mini

Particularly interesting when portability, compact storage and lower power consumption matter. It can be attractive for camping, mobile work and battery-powered use, but plan and performance requirements should still drive the choice.

Higher-performance equipment

Specialized business, mobility and priority-use hardware exists for demanding applications. Most rural households should not assume they need expensive hardware simply because the property is remote.

Hardware generations differ in router design, cabling, Ethernet options, mounting hardware and power consumption. Before buying third-party mounts, extension cables, Ethernet adapters or replacement routers, identify the exact Starlink kit generation you are receiving.

7 • INSTALLATION

A good Starlink installation begins before anything is drilled.

Check the sky

Use the Starlink app’s obstruction tool at the exact proposed mounting position. Repeat the test at alternate locations if necessary.

Choose a safe permanent mount

Prefer a stable position with the best field of view that can be installed and maintained safely. Height is useful only when it meaningfully clears obstructions.

Plan the cable route

Decide how the cable enters the building, how it will be protected from abrasion and weather, and where the router/power equipment will live.

Plan indoor coverage

Put the router where it can serve the building rather than wherever the cable happens to arrive. Long buildings and thick walls may need additional access points.

Power it properly

Use a dependable receptacle and consider surge protection or UPS backup if short outages would disrupt work, calls or security systems.

Observe after installation

Review obstruction and outage history after the system has operated for a while. A successful speed test immediately after installation is not the whole acceptance test.

Roof safety matters. If the only workable location requires risky roof access, tree climbing, a tall mast or work near overhead electrical conductors, use an appropriately qualified installer rather than treating a better signal as worth an unsafe installation.

8 • WI-FI & LOCAL NETWORKING

“Starlink is slow upstairs” may actually mean “Wi-Fi is slow upstairs.”

The satellite connection ends at the Starlink equipment. From there, your local Wi-Fi or Ethernet network takes over. Thick log walls, concrete, metal siding, foil-backed insulation, appliances and long distances can make a good internet connection feel poor.

Router placement matters. Putting the router in a basement utility room at one end of the building may be convenient for the cable but poor for wireless coverage. If possible, place wireless equipment centrally and in the open rather than inside a metal cabinet or behind dense construction.

Larger properties may benefit from wired Ethernet, additional access points or a properly designed mesh network. Outbuildings are often better served by a dedicated point-to-point wireless bridge or buried fibre/Ethernet solution than by hoping the house Wi-Fi will reach across a yard.

One-room slowdown

Test beside the router. If the connection is fast there and slow only in one part of the building, solve the Wi-Fi problem before changing the internet plan.

Outbuildings

Workshops, offices and cabins on the same property often deserve their own network link. A point-to-point bridge can be cleaner than trying to stretch consumer Wi-Fi far beyond the house.

Own router/firewall

Advanced users can integrate third-party networking gear with compatible Starlink hardware. This is useful when VLANs, managed Wi-Fi, site-to-site connectivity or stronger firewall features are required.

9 • POWER & OFF-GRID USE

At a remote site, internet uptime can become a power-engineering problem.

Starlink hardware needs continuous electrical power, and power draw varies by model, weather and operating mode. That matters little on normal utility power, but it matters enormously at a cabin running on batteries, solar or generator power.

Basic energy calculation watts × hours ÷ 1000 = kilowatt-hours

Example: a 75 W average load running 24 hours uses about 1.8 kWh per day before inverter and battery-system losses.

Do not size to the average alone daily energy + losses + winter margin + other loads

Snow-melt operation can raise consumption. Batteries also deliver less usable capacity in cold weather, and solar production can be much lower during short winter days.

Starlink publishes approximate average power ranges that vary by terminal. Current guidance lists roughly 50–75 W for Standard Actuated, roughly 75–100 W for Standard 4/4 X, and roughly 20–40 W for Mini when measured as a complete operating system. Real draw can vary.

For a normal home, a small UPS can keep the internet alive through brief utility flickers and give time for equipment to shut down cleanly. For a remote-work site, keeping Starlink, the router and one laptop powered may provide more practical uptime than trying to run every household circuit from backup power.

10 • SNOW, RAIN & WEATHER

Starlink is designed for weather, but weather still changes the operating conditions.

Snow

Starlink terminals include Snow Melt functionality. Heavy accumulation can still interrupt service, especially if the terminal becomes completely covered. Pre-heat modes can increase power use.

Rain & storms

Heavy precipitation can temporarily reduce satellite-link performance. For most households this is occasional, but mission-critical sites should not pretend any single wireless link is an absolute guarantee.

Wind

Wind is primarily an installation issue. A secure mount, suitable fasteners and sensible placement matter. Temporary mounts should not become permanent simply because they worked on the first calm day.

Winter installation tip: think about where melted snow can refreeze, where roof snow may slide, and whether the terminal remains accessible for inspection without requiring unsafe winter roof access.

11 • TECHNICAL NETWORKING

For normal users it feels like ordinary internet. For network administrators, a few differences matter.

CGNAT

Residential and Roam IPv4 connections normally operate behind carrier-grade NAT. Your router may not receive a conventional publicly reachable IPv4 address, which affects inbound connections and ordinary port forwarding.

IPv6

Starlink supports IPv6. Whether a particular application benefits from it depends on the router, firewall, operating systems and remote service involved.

VPNs

Normal outbound VPN use is generally practical. Some inbound or unusual site-to-site designs need additional planning because of CGNAT, and a VPN itself can add latency or reduce throughput.

If you need to reach cameras, servers, a NAS, remote desktop or an internal application from outside the property, do not assume conventional IPv4 port-forwarding will work. Consider outbound VPN/tunnel architectures, cloud-mediated remote access, IPv6 where appropriate, or an eligible service tier that provides suitable addressing.

This distinction matters for businesses and advanced home networks but usually has little impact on normal browsing, streaming, video conferencing or cloud application use.

Security note: CGNAT is not a substitute for endpoint security, strong passwords, multifactor authentication, software updates or a properly configured firewall. It changes inbound reachability; it does not make devices inherently secure.

12 • TROUBLESHOOTING

Diagnose the layer that is actually failing.

Check the Starlink app

Review current status, alerts, outage information and obstruction history before restarting equipment repeatedly.

Separate internet from Wi-Fi

Test beside the router, then at the problem device. A large difference points toward local Wi-Fi rather than the satellite link.

Inspect power and cabling

Verify the router/power supply, connectors and visible cable route. Intermittent power or cable damage can mimic provider problems.

Frequent short dropouts

  • Review the obstruction map.
  • Check for new leaves, branches or snow.
  • Confirm the terminal was not moved or knocked out of position.

Only one room is slow

  • Test near the router.
  • Check which Wi-Fi band/node is being used.
  • Consider a wired access point or mesh node rather than changing the internet provider.

Everything is slow at busy times

  • Repeat tests over several days.
  • Check plan tier and congestion expectations.
  • Compare results with Starlink’s current plan specifications rather than an old advertisement.

Is Starlink good for rural BC?

Often, yes—especially where fibre, cable and good fixed-wireless or cellular service are unavailable. The biggest property-specific issue is usually obstruction. A clear sky view can matter more than being close to a town.

Does Starlink work around Lytton and the Fraser Canyon?

It can, but steep slopes and tall trees make location testing important. Run the Starlink app’s obstruction scan at the exact proposed dish position and height. A neighbour’s successful installation is encouraging but does not prove your lot has the same sky view.

Will mountains block Starlink?

Do trees really cause dropouts?

Yes. Starlink explicitly lists branches and other objects as potential causes of interruption. Even partial or seasonal foliage can matter if it repeatedly crosses the terminal’s active field of view.

Does Starlink work in snow?

How much electricity does Starlink use?

Can I run Starlink from a battery or solar setup?

Is Starlink better than a cellular hotspot?

Residential or Roam—which should I choose?

Choose Residential for a normal fixed household location. Choose Roam when portability, travel or in-motion use is central to the requirement. Compare the current data allowance, price, priority and travel restrictions rather than choosing only by hardware size.

Can I pause Starlink?

Starlink currently supports Standby Mode on eligible plans. It is not the same as completely free service: it provides limited connectivity for a smaller charge and easier reactivation. Plan and capacity conditions can change, so verify the option in your account.

Can I use my own router or firewall?

Yes, with compatible hardware and the correct connection/bypass setup. This is useful for larger homes, managed Wi-Fi, VLANs, advanced firewalls and building-to-building networks. Remember that Residential/Roam IPv4 service still normally sits behind Starlink’s CGNAT.

Can I host a server or forward ports on Residential Starlink?

Not in the conventional IPv4 way. Default Residential/Roam IPv4 uses CGNAT and the Starlink router does not support port forwarding. Outbound tunnels, cloud-mediated remote access and many VPN clients can still work; public IPv4 is associated with eligible Priority plans.

Does Starlink work with VPNs?

Many VPNs work. Starlink states that TCP/UDP VPNs are supported, but CGNAT means NAT traversal matters. Some protocols are more compatible than others, and the VPN itself may add latency.

Do I need a professional installer?

Many installs are user-installable. Professional help becomes sensible when the only good location requires roof work, a tall pole, difficult cable routing, tree work or anything else that cannot be done safely.
